MARK WARREN PLAYS THE HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
There was much discussion on the role of the creative industries during the pandemic – how relevant did they prove to be. It turns out that creatives working remotely from their organisations found their own independent agency.
Mark Warren works with the DPS as an AL and more than justified the role of creative agency as he considered south London and what would challenge the isolation which individuals encountered. He independently readdressed the potential of a safe community space in Camberwell.
In the height of covid lockdowns, when people felt disconnected, Home Court brought the community together through a series of basketball and art workshops
'Home Court' is an art project in the D'Eynsford Estate, Camberwell in South London. In the height of covid lockdowns, when people felt disconnected, the project brought the community together through a series of basketball and art workshops that informed the final design. We were able to bring people together safely to inform the design of the project. More information on the journey can be found on the Creatives D'Eynsford.
The outcome is a refreshed and uplifting piece of basketball court art located in the heart of the estate. One resident said: ‘I want to see it from space!’
With support from the D'Eynsford Tenant Management Organisation, the project was produced and curated by resident Dr Thomas Morgan Evans and artist Lespleen and designed by artist and architect Mark Warren.

The patchwork of simple geometric shapes and simple bold palette form the word 'home' and was painted with the residents. ‘Home’ was chosen for its connection with sport as well as the court being at the centre of this community’s home. Home is where the art is!
A massive shout out to all of the residents that got involved, to the talented and enthusiastic young people on the estate, Southwark Council and UCL for funding the project as well as the Sunflowers football club and the proactive team at the D'Eynsford TMO.
