“Creativity is a Universal Language”

Good Nugget

Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) Student Laiba Rahman on her placement at Mud Orange

I started September 2024 with my foot in the door of real-life work. Getting to work at a creative studio agency called Mud Orange, where I was responsible for client brand development, brainstorming ideas and being an overall junior designer, was a big and scary step and an experience I knew was vital for me to learn just before I graduate. But it has been a wonderful and eventful experience. Not a day went by without learning and experiencing something new. At first, I was very nervous and kept asking endless questions, but I soon realised that making mistakes was part of my growth and would shape me as a designer. With the support of my great mentors and team, I managed to get hands-on experience with clients, from developing logo concepts to bringing them to life through animation! I also had the opportunity to work on TikTok content, which received great engagement! Seeing my work presented to clients and receiving their feedback has been a surreal and exciting experience. It was such a satisfying experience when my team gave the green light, and I got my work presented to the clients. Hearing their feedback, both positive and constructive, made me feel like I was truly stepping into the professional world. Finally, I was able to showcase my designs to real people, and that felt amazing!

Beyond my placement, I’ve made sure to expand my experience through volunteering and networking. I had the opportunity to help at an event hosted by the Islam Channel for the WAW Creative Arts, the world’s first Muslim creative arts school. It was an unforgettable experience where I connected with fellow Muslim creatives and engaged with a diverse range of businesses and charities. I also attended a networking event hosted by Good Nugget, designed for people from underrepresented backgrounds. Hearing professionals in marketing and design share their journeys—their struggles, successes, and how they navigated through their challenges, was truly inspiring and motivating for my future

Overall, these past few months have been a whirlwind. From working with clients to connecting with other creatives, it’s been an amazing experience. Reflecting on it, I’ve gained invaluable insights into the creative industry and seen myself grow in ways I didn't expect! I’m excited to see how these experiences will continue to shape my path in the months to come!
